Telling a Book by its Cover Thursday, Jun 21 2007

Have you ever thought about the importance of a cover to its book.  Talk about first impressions! Well, that is the cover.  The cover is the first insight that a reader receives into a new book.  However good the book may be, if it does not have a suitable or eye-catching cover, it may just remain on the book shelf. Perhaps this seems a little unfair, but there are many people that make their reading selection according to the picture or colour on the front of the book.  There is such a wide range of different books out there that people have to choose somehow.  So, one picks up a book because of its cover ? its colour or its attractive illustration.  People usually do not select a book solely due to its cover, but for many ? if not most ? it is the first appealing aspect.  Once the book has found its way into the potential reader’s hand, then it is often the duty of the summary of the story to take over. The book can not risk all of its allure in the cover alone.  It is then the turn of reviews or an outline to do some work and hopefully to have some affect on the next possible reader.

Once the book has been read and the book returns to the book shelf, the cover waits for its next chance to tempt another book lover.  All in all, the cover holds an extremely important role in attracting readers to the book.

Set off on an Adventure Thursday, Jun 14 2007

Starting to read a new book is like setting off on an adventure.  This is the
beginning of a fresh and exciting journey - you are embarking into an unknown
exploration, totally unaware of what awaits.  This book may be a thriller,
mystery, horror, or a romantic story. No matter type of book it is that you
prefer to read, it may still be considered like an adventure.  At first, you are
perhaps a little uncertain, as everything in the novel appears so strange and
unfamiliar.  However, as you progress into the novel and the story begins to
unravel, a certain bond is created between the reader and the characters and
excitement stirs.  Now that I think about it, there is rather an unusual
relationship between the reader and the author, as the reader attempts to
understand the writer’s meaning, intentions and every nuance. Anticipation sets
in, as the reader is eager to discover what lies in wait within the story.

When I come to the end of a good novel, rather than being pleased at reaching
the conclusion and finding out the climax of the story, I am often saddened to
be at the end of the book. It means that this particular adventure is
unfortunately over and I have to leave the characters which I have met along the
way.  I must leave them now as the book is over - and perhaps wait for a
possible sequel. I cannot wait long for the next one to begin.  Starting to read
a new book is like setting off on an adventure.

Nose in a Book Wednesday, Jun 6 2007

As a child I loved reading books.  It was my favourite activity during the hours after school.  I loved going to the library in order to choose which books I would be able to devour next. I remember many a disagreement with my younger brother because he wanted to play some game while my nose was deeply pressed inside the pages of a book.  As I did not wish to play because I preferred to read my book, he decided that it was best to disturb me.

In recent years, the wonderful pastime of reading books has rather been pushed to the side among the pressures of family and work.  However, a couple of weeks ago, I decided that this was no longer a good excuse and that the time had come to pick up a book again.  It took me a while to choose a suitable book.  The selection process began with the picture on the cover, proceeded to the book title and then progressed to the summary of the novel on the back.  Enjoying the smell of the new book I placed it in its bag and rushed home, deeply excited.  Ignoring everything else that did or did not need to be done, I opened the cover of my new book.  Settled comfortably into the sofa and enveloped by cushions, I began my journey into the new story.  It did not take long and I was soon oblivious to my real surroundings as I became lost in the characters and the narrative of the novel.
