The Magic System

The magic of Harry Potter, like that of all fantasy can be analysed as a “magical system”. This system describes the laws governing the use of magic and what can be achieved via magic. The magic system, once it is clearly defined, becomes a tool for storyteller in the weaving of his fantasy tales.

 A Problematic Magic System

One of the problems inherent in the magical world of Harry Potter is that the magic system does not support a good epic fantasy story. In a magical world where everything is governed by magic, one of the highlights of epic fantasy is the magical duel. In order to allow conducting of quality magical duels, an appropriate magic system needs to be in use. Unfortunately, the magic system created by J. K. Rowling is sadly inadequate for duels. This becomes evident as soon as the characters start duelling with one another. The ensuing battle looks like a fancy gunfight with the heroes blasting away with their wands rather than with revolvers. To her credit, Rowling makes some attempt to atone for this serious problem. The first duel between Harry and his nemesis actually becomes something showy and impressive. The rest of the duels are quite a disappointment.

Another Bad Duel

By the way, another classic example of a really bad looking magical duel can be seen in the movie of Lord of the Rings. The duel between Gandalf and Saruman is shown and it looks a lot like two old men batting at each other with their staves. What makes it a “magical” duel is the time delay between each swing and how far each antagonist is flung. It really is a sorry sight.
