A Candle in the Underdark

Drizzt Do’Urden is the famous dark elven character who stars in several novels and trilogies. He is the creation of the author R. A. Salvatore. The stories of Drizzt’s first adventures are set in the locale known as the ‘Underdark’. The Underdark is a land of twisting tunnels and vast caverns all underground. Drizzt’s home city, Menzoberranzan, is a city of ruthless and very evil dark elves. Somehow, Drizzt manages to be raised among such evil with a soul that is radiantly pure. Such a light of virtue survives the darkness only by being possessed by a hero of incredible swordsmanship and bravery. Drizzt eventually manages to make his way to sunlit lands where he continues his adventures to the delight of the readers.

Drizzt as a Symbol

While I have much to say regarding my analysis of Drizzt and the stories about him, I would like to start from some fundamental issues. The first issue that I feel ought to be addressed is that of Drizzt’s purity and innate goodness. The idea of an innate good that develops in the surrounding darkness is quite ancient. In the Bible, for example, we have Enoch who grew up among the evil people subsequently destroyed by the flood. Another example is the patriarch Abraham who was raised among heathen idol worshippers. Thanks to his unwavering faith in The L-rd was he able to succeed and even prosper against all odds. I tend to prefer equating Drizzt with Abraham since, like Drizzt, when Abraham abandons his country and his people it is only the beginning of the biblical story and the many adventures that follow, only serve to bring him closer to The L-rd.

A Change of Tune

I would like to start a series of blog entries discussing various topics related to epic fantasy. This is a slight change of tune from what has been written until now. If anyone objects, I would be happy to know.

Forgotten Realms

Forgotten Realms is a fantasy world originally created by Ed Greenwood. This world became a very popular Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting and was subsequently used by many players and authors. Several fantasy computer games were based in this world as well. The frequent use of this world has made it into a very rich and detailed one that is well suited for further exciting adventures. The characters featured in the novels of Forgotten Realms are many and diverse. One of the popular characters is the “dark elf” known as Drizzt Do’Urden. This elf, a creation of the author R. A, Salvatore has been the subject of many novels and stories. In fact, there are several trilogies describing his adventures. He has also made “guest appearances” in some of the popular D&D computer games.

Drizzt’s World

While the world of Forgotten Realms is well suited for the needs of players and authors seeking high adventure and a wide plethora of nasty monsters to beat up, it is theoretically a world where normal people work and live. Despite some attempts of the various authors at accounting for this, there is still a lot of realism that is lacking in this fantastic world. While some people might claim that this is a problem and that this world lacks realism, I hold a different opinion. From my point of view the world was designed to be an exciting one where high adventure takes place frequently. This is not really a world intended for regular people.
